How Readers Are Using Roadside History

How Readers Are Using The Roadside History of Illinois In their Travels
“As a camper of many years, I have frequented several areas in Illinois multiple times. This past November, 2013, following Stan Banash's book signing of Roadside History of Illinois, I took the book along in my travels to Starved Rock State Park and Pere Marquette State Park to enrich my knowledge of the places at which I hiked and stayed. Driving from Chicago to Ottawa to Alton, IL, and on return, I referenced the book to enlighten my history of the areas along the way. It is a valuable companion for in-state, small town travels. And I was able to share the information gained with my friends. Understanding the history, geography or industry of particular areas is most enlightening to the appreciation of towns. I believe, one can never be too informed. I plan to keep the book in the car as I travel. I definitely recommend the book to all who travel through Illinois.”

“I traveled on the Metra Train to visit my daughter for Christmas this past year. Traveling from Chicago to Troy, Illinois, I brought along your book, Roadside History of Illinois. The train made several stops as it moved south. The book revealed fascinating information about each stop along the way. It also included interesting facts and stories about historical figures involved with the various locations. Being a longtime resident of Illinois, I was quite surprised to learn how little I knew about the various towns and cities I passed through. Your book was both informative and enlightening on so much Illinois history. I would highly recommend this book to all Illinoisans.”

“We have a new companion during our annual drive the length of Illinois on I-57 before connecting to I-24 and other highways to reach our Florida destination. It is the book, Roadside History of Illinois, a traveler’s guide to the state’s history. On trips in previous years, towns were nondescript. Now my wife reads their history to me as we pass them. What a great way to learn about our state. When planning a trip, it’s nice to map out some sites to see along the way. Our Interstate drives will no longer be boring trips but adventures in discovering the Prairie State.”

“As we travel around and through Illinois, we have taken the book with us to be able to see the sights in towns listed. It is most informative, and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading and studying its pages. Thank you for your research.” Linda H. Oregon

"I endorse 'Roadside History' as an important read...especially for those of us who live in the northern part of the state who think that towns below Champaign are foreign."
